Buy Plants in nursery

The Shadiest Online Nursery.

Why so shady?

Our nursery is shadier than most.

That's because most of our trees and plants are grown in the shade of a forest.

Hi! My name is Ryan. My wife and I are the owners of Spruce & Maple.

Calling our nursery "shady" started out as a joke between us, but then it became true... in a different way.

Once upon a time, we owned a landscape company. As my wife designed our landscape installs, her interest in harder-to-find plants and trees grew. We especially loved Japanese Maples. She would hunt down cultivars we couldn't find locally. I often found myself strapped into the passenger seat as she drove us hours away to retrieve them. Those long drives were often spent dreaming about owning our own nursery.

One day, we looked at our collection, and realized we had basically already started that nursery. We decided to go ahead and start selling our trees! Before I knew it, I had customers frequently visiting our backyard to pick out a new Japanese Maple. My wife thought it was a bit shady to have strangers constantly at our door and in our backyard, and calling our backyard nursery "shady" became our joke. We knew we needed a real location, so we began looking for a place to have our nursery. We imagined some dreamy vintage-style nursery, where our kids would play under our feet as we tended to trees and customers. Instead, we ended up purchasing a 16 acre old-growth forest that our family fell in love with.

Today, we grow almost 600 different cultivars of Japanese Maples, and 100 different Hostas in the shade of that forest.

We know how important it is to protect mature trees, native plants, and wildlife, along with beneficial insects. We are always striving to improve our agroforestry practices. And, while there are laws that don't allow us to be completely chemical free, we do our best to use them as little as possible.

Some people have asked about our conifers. "You can't grow those in shade, can you?" Well, no. We can't. That's pretty much the least shady thing about us. Our conifers are grown in a few small clearings that were already on the property when we purchased it.

It's not always easy, but we are doing our best to maintain a balance between owning an online nursery business and being stewards of the nature we love.

Thank you so much for choosing us! We hope our shady nursery helps you to create a special wonderland of your own! Also, we'd love the chance thank you personally! Join our Facebook group and say "hello" so we can do just that!
